When it comes to multiplayer shooters, Nintendo’s Splatoon has undoubtedly made a significant impact on the gaming community. So, when Foamstars made its debut earlier this year, many couldn’t help but compare the two games. After having the opportunity to play several matches of Foamstars at gamescom, I can confirm that this comparison is indeed valid.
It is true that playing only four matches in one mode during the event is not enough to fully understand the intricacies of Foamstars. It hardly made me familiar with its controls. However, as someone who recently played Splatoon 3, I couldn’t help but notice the striking similarities in the gameplay mechanics. Shooting colorful foam and maneuvering quickly around the arena is at the core of what Foamstars offers. Although there are subtle differences, such as the three-dimensional effects of the foam and the ability to create barriers with bubbles, the impact on movement is identical to Splatoon’s ink. Moving across your team’s color is very easy, while moving across the opponent’s foam feels sluggish. Additionally, instead of diving into the foam like Splatoon’s Inklings, you surf on its surface. Nevertheless, the combination of shooting and quickly approaching targets feels very familiar.
The mode I play is called Smash the Star, a four versus four battle with a simple objective: eliminate the opposing team’s players seven times, and their best player will become the ‘star’. Defeating the star player results in victory. This game offers eight characters divided into four types, each with their own unique abilities and weapons. Some characters use explosive weapons that can shoot quickly to balance firepower and speed, while others carry rifles that can push opponents back with bubbles. Precision characters rely on guided laser shots to enhance accuracy, and Foamstars have a large cannon that can cover the battlefield with foam. Each character also has two unique special attacks, ranging from foam grenades to giant shark torpedoes.
