The best game, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, will be released early next year.
After a long wait, it seems that STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl will finally be released early next year, with developer GSC World attending gamescom to discuss this highly anticipated sequel. And GSC has an interesting story to tell: after being announced and then canceled in 2011, revived in 2018, and then postponed due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But now, we can finally see more about STALKER 2.
The game director and CEO of GSC Game World, Evgeniy Grygorovych, took the time to visit the IGN gamescom studio to answer our questions about how this time has been going, the importance of creating realistic recreation of Chornobyl, what audiences can expect after more than 10 years since the original game, and much more.
I asked a question on Twitter about what people want to know about STALKER 2. The team is currently facing a war in Ukraine, which has had a significant impact on the development, not just for the game but also for the people working on it. So everyone wants to know how the team is doing and how they feel now that the game is finally here for the public to play.
Evgeniy Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World, responded, “Yes, that’s a good question. So, our team feels very different. The majority of our team members are Ukrainians and some of them left the country before the war started because we were aware that it might happen and we wanted to keep everyone safe. Our main motivation is to save everyone. So, we thought we would move everyone to a safe place and then decide what to do next.”
And we advise everyone to take on their tasks and journeys. We have a plan. We have prepared this plan well in advance. We have many buses ready with drivers for 24 hours, seven days a week, standing near the office, so if at any time everyone knows where to go to sit and move. But it happened when we realized that it would happen right before it happened. And we had the opportunity to move a little earlier. So for me, I have already left the country, and for me, it is very different from what my friends who are still there feel.
It is terrifying. Extremely terrifying. But at some point when you are in it, when you are working, so you are in that country, bombs can come and devastate. At some point, you become accustomed to it and it becomes normal. It’s very strange to say, but for many of us, the normal is when bombs fly, it’s okay. Someone dies, it’s not okay, and it’s truly different. And creating this game is very helpful because we can focus on bringing something to this world, bringing art, experiences, stories, and that’s what drives us and makes us feel better and happier at some point. And it helps everyone on our team to become stable and move forward.
Some of our team went to the Army, to survive. That was their decision. So I will say they went there from day one. They don’t have any experience happening, but they want to stand there and protect.
