STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl – Kembalinya Nostalgia ke Kultus Klasik
It has been 16 years since STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, and for many cult PC series fans, this is the long-awaited return. STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl was showcased at gamescom 2023, and even though I have been absent from this series for over ten years, it feels like I never left. The slow-paced exploration and intense gunfights instantly bring back memories of the original game, and it is a nostalgic experience.
However, despite being based on Unreal Engine 5 and having Microsoft’s support, STALKER 2 still falls into the category of “eurojank” – a term used to describe ambitious Eastern European games that have technical weaknesses. The animations are stiff, human faces look unnatural, AI struggles to remain intelligent, and inventory management is poor. However, despite these shortcomings, STALKER 2 offers an authentic and full of opportunities Soviet bloc world.
During my journey through the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, I encountered a man fighting mutated dogs. As a precaution, I shot at their heads but failed to hit my optional target. This demonstrates STALKER 2’s emphasis on realism, where NPCs are not immune to stray or aimed shots, and objectives change based on their fate.
Next in the game, I encountered two surviving individuals named Zhorik and Gloomy, who had been attacked by bandits. Zhorik informed me that the bandits had taken over the nearest boiler house, and I volunteered to attack them. The fight felt true to the origins of this series, with sharp and powerful weapons that felt unreliable – a deviation from modern shooters. However, the bandits were not very intelligent and spent their time awkwardly walking in the open or being fixated on cover. I hope the AI will be improved before this game is launched.
Overall, the brief demo at gamescom reminded me of the original 2007 game. STALKER 2 feels like a spiritual and mechanical remake, with an old-school approach that caters to loyal fans. However, this may not be as appealing to mainstream players seeking a more modern experience. Metro: Exodus, another Soviet shooter, may be a better choice for those players. Nevertheless, for those who are willing to embrace its rough edges and unique flavor, STALKER 2 could be an intriguing game to watch out for. A more substantial demo will be needed to truly assess its potential and worthiness.
In conclusion, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl offers a nostalgic return to the cult classic series with familiar gameplay mechanics and an atmospheric world. While it may have some technical shortcomings, the game still manages to capture the essence of the original game and provide a unique experience for fans. It remains to be seen whether it will appeal to a wider audience, but for those seeking something different in the FPS genre, STALKER 2 is definitely worth considering.
