If there is one thing that Bethesda is known for, it is their “out” moments. The first adventure in an unknown world – whether it’s opening an old sealed Vault in Fallout or encountering a Skyrim dragon that takes you to a world full of danger and new wonders. Starfield is no different, wasting no time in introducing you to the vast beauty of its world with stunning effects. But let’s discuss how it is done a little further. Here is a brief overview of what happens in the first few minutes of Starfield’s first mission, appropriately titled One Small Step, after seeing it at gamescom 2023.
The Sol date is May 7, 2330. You are at the Argos Extractor Mining Post on the moon Vectera. The first sound heard is Supervisor Lin, a clear leader here who has one simple rule: Listen to Lin. He is accompanied by fellow miner Heller, who brings a sense of cheerfulness and charm. It is evident from the start that Starfield will be home to a mix of Bethesda’s quirky characters supported by sharp writing.
This writing also does a good job in the initial stage of introducing you to the language and knowledge within the universe. Slang language like “Dusties” is casually thrown around as you assemble the meanings of these new words. The long-worn outer clothing of the mining industry only adds to the sense of place created in these opening moments, as does the design of the machines used – especially the large rotating drill that reminds me of Thunderbirds’ Mole.
The mine itself is a long cave that you pass through as Lin and Heller remind you of the task at hand – more minerals, more money. The atmosphere cannot be breathed without a mask, an early example that this is a place where humans should not be. Stalagmites and stalactites frame the cave, while a red laser cuts through the air creating a pink light above the sand-colored rocks.
The visuals here are an improvement for Bethesda Game Studios, but may not be on par with the latest graphic capabilities. The environment looks nice, but the character models still have that typical Bethesda stiffness – not much happening behind their eyes. One thing that is not likely to disappoint, however, is the majestic music that accompanies these initial steps, with resonating strings and an air of mystery.
After a short period of time, you are encouraged to acquire your own Laser Cutter. Your own red beam presses on the Beryllium deposit before dispersing it and sending it to your inventory. Mining may not be the most exciting way to start this adventure full of potential, but it is all a deception for something much more valuable. You soon find yourself walking alone into the tunnel. What could go wrong?
The first thing you encounter is a calm and strangely beautiful sight – a metallic blue deposit surrounded by shimmering remnants floating in the air. Before you realize it, you dip your hand into the peculiar artifact and undergo a change of mind and vision, similar to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. In a matter of moments, it doesn’t seem too different from the opening of the original Mass Effect. Upon waking up, you appear to be affected by the event, although there is little time to contemplate it before Heller and Lin place a tablet in front of you, signaling the beginning.
