The Pokémon World Championship 2023 in Yokohama, Japan showcases the top players from around the world competing for a large sum of money and incredible prizes. Among the participants are Diane Schemanske and her son Alex, who make history as the first mother-child duo to compete together in the Pokémon TCG World Championship.
Diane, who works as the Head of Corporate Services and lives in Brighton, MI, became a Poké-Mom when her son Alex expressed interest in playing in Pokémon card tournaments. Determined to support her son’s passion, Diane decided to learn the game and compete alongside him. Her other son, Christopher, also joined them in the competitive Pokémon scene, with Alex becoming a multiple-time Pokémon Champion and Christopher achieving impressive tournament results before becoming a Pokémon tournament judge. After 13 years of competing, Diane finally received an invitation to play in the World Championship alongside her son.
In the Pokémon TCG community, Diane is known as “The Best Schemanske.” Her journey to qualify for Worlds required her to participate in tournaments throughout the year and earn Championship Points (CP) by achieving high placements. This year, Masters players from North America needed 350 CP to receive an invitation. Just a few weeks before the end of the season, Diane found herself 68 points away from qualifying. Determined to make it, she attended as many tournaments as possible, even traveling to Johannesburg, South Africa, and managed to reach the required amount just in time.
During the tournament, Diane drove the popular Fusion Mew VMAX deck. Despite finishing Day 1 with four wins and four losses, which was less than the six wins needed to advance to Day 2, her deck choice proved wise. Vance Kelley, the eventual tournament winner, also used the same deck. Although eliminated from the competition, Diane remained positive and expressed her excitement for receiving an invitation to compete in the World Championship. Winning or losing didn’t matter to her; she was proud of her achievements and enjoyed interacting with her opponents.
Meanwhile, Alex achieved an impressive 11th place in the tournament, earning $2,500 and other prizes. Diane and her sons were able to travel the world and compete together, using their prize money to cover travel expenses. They made sure to attend every tournament they could, including four major international tournaments held in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Oceania.
Diane offers valuable advice to potential participants in the Pokémon World Championship: never give up and keep trying. Throughout her 13-year journey, she faced ups and downs but remained determined. If you are a parent, play with your children and learn valuable lessons from them while teaching them as well. The Pokémon community is filled with helpful individuals who can guide you and help you improve. Diane has received a lot of advice from fellow players, which has contributed to her growth as a player.
Diane Schemanske and her son Alex have made history as the first mother-son duo to compete in the Pokémon TCG World Championships. Their journey showcases the power of determination, family support, and the joy of competing in the Pokémon community. Whether they win or lose, their love for the game and the experiences they share together are what truly matter.
