The best game is Baldur’s Gate 3. As a gamer, I can’t stop thinking about the progress I’ve made in several campaigns, uncovering secrets and new areas, and even determining which character is most suitable for certain conversations. As someone who has failed to enjoy tabletop D&D games in the past due to lack of interest, I was initially hesitant to play the video game version. Fortunately, I was completely wrong.
Currently, I have three campaigns that I am playing – a Storm Sorcerer who is intrigued by mystical things, an ironically oath-breaking Paladin who did so within just 30 minutes of his adventure, and a charismatic Bard who is eager to let Astarion continue biting his neck. With every decision I make in my adventure, Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstrates the importance of accessible design, especially when a game can be so confusing. In this month’s Designed for Accessibility, I want to understand the need for cognitive accessibility and why Baldur’s Gate 3, despite my love for it, is a highly complex title.
Before I delve into my criticisms and concerns from the perspective of cognitive accessibility, I would like to commend Larian Studios for their work in terms of physical accessibility. Despite there being numerous buttons and keys that perform various commands such as abilities, camera control, and inventory management, every major action can be completed solely using the mouse. As someone with a progressive disease and weakening muscles, it is increasingly disheartening to have to stop playing expansive games. I do not want to cease playing with friends due to my limitations, and having the ability to conserve energy while playing for hours on end is one of the best aspects of this game. It doesn’t matter if my body is too tired to press certain buttons, and I also don’t need to schedule sessions during peak energy levels. If my friends are ready to join, I am also ready, all thanks to mouse control.
The design and cognitive accessibility features of Baldur’s Gate 3 have advantages and disadvantages for each player’s experience. As I mentioned before, its relationship with accessibility levels is complex. Depending on your preferred play style, players with different disabilities may face barriers ranging from minor discomfort to complete obstacles.
