The next major patch for Terraria is approaching, and the developers at Re-Logic are facing a difficult decision. The success and demand generated by the cult game in 2011 have made it challenging for the team to transition to a new project. Re-Logic’s head, Andrew Spinks, expressed this sentiment in a now-disabled Twitter post, stating that even after 12 years, the game continues to sell like hotcakes.
Terraria has been released on every active gaming platform since its initial release in May 2011. From PC and Nintendo Switch to PlayStation Vita, smartphones, and even Google Stadia, this game has reached a wide audience. Despite the challenging development process, Terraria has grown significantly over its 12-year lifespan. Patches and free content updates have contributed to its success, making it one of the best-selling games of all time with over 44 million copies sold as of May 2022.
However, all good things must come to an end, and it appears that the next major update for Terraria, patch 1.4.5, may mark the conclusion of Re-Logic’s post-launch support. This update will introduce crossover content from the roguelite metroidvania game Dead Cells, along with other updates and improvements. While this could be seen as a potential end to Terraria updates, only time will tell if it truly happens.
Interestingly, Re-Logic had previously attempted to complete post-launch updates for Terraria. In an interview with PC Player, Ted Murphy, the head of business strategy and marketing at Re-Logic, revealed that the team initially planned to end support for the game with patch 1.3 in 2015. However, they had too many ideas and unfinished matters to address. The Journey’s End update in 2020 was also intended as a starting point, but subsequent patches followed.
Now, Murphy is confident that it is time for the team to start working on the second project. This will allow them to explore ideas that may not work or perform well in the current iteration and technology of Terraria. However, Murphy also acknowledges that they have felt this way before and have never said never to future updates. The last update for Terraria is still uncertain.
In June, Re-Logic announced a collaboration with Paper Fort Games to develop the board game version of Terraria. This crowdfunded project aims to expand the Terraria universe by combining digital gameplay exploration, character development, base building, and battles with tabletop mechanics. Although no release date has been provided, it appears that it will not be launched before 2024.
As the journey of Terraria continues, enthusiastic fans eagerly await the next major update and potential conclusion of post-launch support. Whether this truly marks the end or if there will be more updates in the future remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Terraria has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry and its legacy will endure for years to come.
